Sketch Sunday (Oct. 04, 2026)

October 4, 2026

A small offering this week. I took this week as kind of a mini vacation for myself. I wasn’t allowed to do my usual exercises and such because of the cancer removal. I very much appreciated this. I let myself sleep in a little. (The dogs don’t let you sleep TOO much.) And I let myself rest and heal. Friday all the stitches came out so tomorrow I will begin my daily regimens again.

But the sketches I DO have for you this week show some of the real process. For instance the final drawing on this last Friday Thoughts went through many iterations. I start with the basic idea and then start working out the pose.

Ballpoint sketches of the Paintmonkey as Frankenstein's monster with slightly different hand positions.
Slowly coming into focus.

Eventually I pick the final pose and do an (almost) fully rendered final drawing in pencil. I used the blue pencils when I ink physically because you can delete it off digital scans easier as it is a different color. When I ink digitally now (like I did this one) it doesn’t really matter. But I like the feel of the “lead” on these Prismacolor Col-erase pencils.

Then the digitals can be applied.

And finally, one of the more unpleasant aspects of being an artist. Our job is to appreciate the beauty around us…but sometimes an artist’s mission is to focus on that which is disgusting and terrible in the world. From the scholarly nature of Rembrandt’s study of a Slaughtered Ox to the alarming brutality of Goya’s painting of Saturn Devouring his Son the artist’s job is sometimes to share that disgusting reality within the world. Today I am continuing this tradition…

Ballpoint sketch of trump puckering up like the world's ugliest and most rancid kissing booth.
Just…ew.

And that does it for this week’s accountability. I hope your weekend was good. If you live in Georgia TOMORROW is the last day to get registered to vote. EVERYONE needs to make sure they are in the system! Check your registration!
